Agartala, August 28: Two women, identifying themselves as concerned citizens, approached the West Tripura District Administration on Friday, seeking intervention over alleged social media threats and demanding transparency in the crowdfunding campaign launched for the medical treatment of Manashree Choudhury.
One of them, Susmita Nandi, alleged that she has been receiving threats and abusive comments from multiple fake social media accounts after she questioned Manashree Choudhury’s father on Facebook about his role in supporting his daughter’s treatment.
Speaking to reporters, Nandi said she had made a Facebook post questioning what Manashree’s father had done for his daughter, while making it clear that she had no objection to the crowdfunding initiative.
Nandi alleged that following her post, a person associated with Manashree Choudhury’s father contacted her from Germany and threatened to involve the police and mobilise people from her locality against her.
She further alleged that after she was blocked, several fake social media profiles began targeting her, making objectionable remarks about her daughter, her personal life and her business. She also claimed that another woman, Moumita Sutradhar, had faced similar abusive comments and harassment.
Nandi said she approached the District Magistrate seeking an inquiry into the alleged threats and online harassment.
“We want Manashree to recover. Our intention is not to oppose the crowdfunding campaign. We only want the entire amount collected for Manashree to be used for her treatment,” she said.
Meanwhile, Moumita Sutradhar, who said she had also donated towards Manashree Choudhury’s treatment, demanded complete transparency regarding the crowdfunding campaign.
Sutradhar said that everyone who has contributed to Manashree’s treatment—whether ₹1, ₹100 or ₹10,000—has the right to know how much money has been collected from the beginning of the campaign until the present day.
She questioned the practice of displaying account balances on social media as a means of accounting, saying that such information does not provide a complete financial picture.
Sutradhar demanded that a proper account statement be made available, showing the total amount collected and the expenditure incurred for Manashree Choudhury’s treatment. She also urged the District Magistrate to intervene in the matter.
Both women reiterated that their primary concern is Manashree Choudhury’s recovery and that the funds donated by people across Tripura should be utilised solely for her medical treatment.
The two women have submitted applications to the West Tripura District Administration. It remains to be seen what action the District Magistrate takes regarding the allegations of social media harassment and the demand for transparency in the crowdfunding funds.
