The Tripura government on Wednesday felicitated international judoka Asmita Dey for her historic sporting achievement, honouring the state’s “golden girl” with a cash award of Rs 10 lakh and a land allotment.
At a felicitation programme held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha presented the cheque and land allotment document to Asmita in recognition of her outstanding performance on the international stage.
Congratulating the judoka, the Chief Minister said Asmita has made Tripura and the entire country proud with her achievement. He described her as an inspiration for the younger generation and said her success is also a shining example of women’s empowerment.
Asmita created history by winning India’s first-ever gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games, adding a significant chapter to the country’s sporting journey.
Dr. Saha said Tripura has no shortage of sporting talent and stressed that the state government is committed to creating adequate infrastructure and opportunities for budding athletes. He said proper training, discipline, determination and hard work can enable young boys and girls from the state to excel at national and international competitions.
Highlighting Tripura’s growing contribution to Indian sports, the Chief Minister cited Asmita Dey and Padma Shri awardee and Olympian gymnast Dipa Karmakar as examples of athletes who have brought laurels to both the state and the country through dedication and perseverance.
Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, Dipa Karmakar and several other dignitaries attended the felicitation programme.
Earlier, Asmita received a rousing reception on her arrival at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala. It was her maiden visit to her home state after clinching the coveted Commonwealth Games gold medal.
A large number of youths, sports enthusiasts and well-wishers gathered at the airport to welcome the champion. The enthusiastic reception reflected the pride and excitement across Tripura over Asmita’s landmark achievement, which has further strengthened the state’s presence on India’s sporting map.
