Tripura, July 31: Tripura’s Minister for Social Education and Social Welfare, Tinku Roy, on Friday inspected both the existing District Jail in Kailashahar and the under-construction new District Jail at Jaruiltala in Unakoti district. The visit aimed to review the progress of the new prison project and accelerate its completion.
Accompanied by senior officials, including prison authorities and engineers, the minister reviewed the ongoing construction work at the new jail. Speaking to the media after the inspection, Roy said the government has directed the executing agencies, including the Public Works Department (PWD), to expedite the project and complete it by December 2026.
“We have taken a commitment from the concerned agencies to complete the new district jail within this year so that the existing jail can be shifted to the new facility,” the minister said.
Roy also visited the current District Jail in Kailashahar, where he reviewed the condition of the premises. He instructed officials to undertake necessary repair works, including the construction of a new boundary wall, to strengthen the security of the existing jail until the relocation is completed.
On being asked about the future use of the present jail premises after the shift, the minister said the government would take a decision after consulting local residents.
“Kailashahar has a shortage of land for major public infrastructure. Since this is a prime location within the town, we will discuss with the local people and assess their needs before deciding how the land should be utilised in the public interest,” Roy said.
The state government expects the completion of the new jail to significantly improve correctional infrastructure and provide better facilities for inmates and prison administration in Unakoti district.
