Agartala, July 28: Authorities have taken swift action after a video showing the alleged harassment of an app-based auto-rickshaw passenger near Agartala Airport went viral on social media. Police have detained two auto-rickshaw drivers, while the Transport Department has suspended the vehicle’s permit and initiated action against the driver.
According to complainant Binita Ghosh of Siddhi Ashram, the incident took place on July 24 when she was travelling in an app-based auto-rickshaw with her mother. She alleged that a group of auto-rickshaw drivers intercepted the moving vehicle near the airport, forcibly switched off the ignition, took away the key, and prevented the vehicle from proceeding.
Ghosh alleged that the auto drivers verbally abused both her mother and the app-based auto driver. Despite her mother’s repeated requests to let them continue their journey, the accused allegedly refused and challenged them to lodge complaints wherever they wished, claiming that no action would be taken against them.
The situation was eventually defused after a local resident intervened, retrieved the vehicle key from the auto drivers, and returned it to the app-based driver, allowing the passengers to continue their journey.
Speaking after the incident, Binita Ghosh said she uploaded a video of the incident on Instagram the following day. As the footage spread widely on social media and drew strong public support, the police and transport authorities initiated action. She later lodged a formal complaint at the police station.
Meanwhile, the Transport Department issued a show-cause notice to the driver of the auto-rickshaw bearing registration number TR-01-F-2988. The notice states that the driver allegedly unlawfully obstructed an app-based auto-rickshaw, snatched its ignition key, intimidated and harassed the passengers and driver, and prevented the hired vehicle from carrying its passengers.
The department further noted that, if the allegations are found to be true, the acts would amount to serious misconduct and violations under the Motor Vehicles Act and permit conditions. The driver has been directed to submit a written explanation within two days, failing which action, including suspension or cancellation of the driving licence, may be taken.
Officials also confirmed that the permit of the auto-rickshaw has been suspended, while the police investigation into the incident is continuing.
