Tripura, 17 July: Panic gripped Uttar Durganagar, a village along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Khowai district, after two cattle were allegedly stolen from a cowshed during the early hours of Friday.
According to the cattle owner, the animals had been tied inside the cowshed as usual before the family went to bed. At around 2:00 a.m., the owner woke up and noticed that the cowshed door was open. On checking inside, both cattle were found missing.
The owner, identified as Bina Banik of Uttar Durganagar, said the family immediately raised an alarm and followed the hoofprints, which allegedly led towards the border’s barbed-wire fencing. They informed the Border Security Force (BSF), but by the time personnel responded, the suspected thieves had reportedly fled.
“The hoofprints clearly showed that the cattle were taken through the fencing. We informed the BSF immediately. They assured us they would try to recover the animals,” Banik said.
The estimated market value of the two cattle is around ₹40,000 to ₹50,000, according to the owner.
Following the incident, Banik lodged a written complaint at Khowai Police Station, seeking an investigation and recovery of the stolen cattle. Police have reportedly initiated an inquiry into the case.
The incident has triggered concern among residents of the border village, with locals questioning how such a theft could occur despite regular security deployment in the area. They have urged authorities to strengthen surveillance and take effective measures to prevent recurring cattle thefts along the India-Bangladesh border.
Police are investigating the matter, while efforts are underway to trace the missing cattle.
