Daring Temple Theft Just 200 Metres from Police Station: Donation Box Stolen from Loknath Temple, Break-in Attempt at Kamaleswari Kali Bari Raises Questions Over Night Patrol
Kamalpur, Tripura: A daring theft at a temple located barely 200 metres from Kamalpur Police Station has sparked concern over law and order in the town. The incident took place at the Loknath Temple in Azad Hind Para under Ward No. 1, near Kamalpur Market, where unidentified miscreants allegedly broke into the shrine during the night and stole the temple’s donation box.
According to local residents, the temple was locked as usual on Thursday night. However, when a local caretaker arrived the following morning to open the temple, he found the main entrance lock broken, the lights inside switched off, and the temple in a disturbed condition. He immediately alerted local residents, who informed Kamalpur Police. Officers soon reached the spot and launched an investigation.
Preliminary information suggests that the donation box, which had reportedly not been opened for nearly a year, was taken away by the thieves. Temple authorities estimate that it contained around ₹15,000 in offerings.
Local sources said police brought a man identified as Abu Gowala in for questioning on suspicion in connection with the case. However, police have not officially confirmed any arrest so far.
In a related development, miscreants also allegedly attempted to break into the Kamaleswari Kali Bari on the same night. They reportedly tried to break one of the temple’s locks but failed to gain entry.
The back-to-back incidents targeting two prominent religious places in a single night have left residents worried. The fact that one of the thefts occurred within walking distance of the police station has raised questions among locals about the effectiveness of night patrolling and overall security arrangements in Kamalpur.
Residents have demanded a thorough investigation, the immediate arrest of those responsible, and stronger night patrols to prevent similar incidents in the future. Police are continuing their investigation.
