Kailashahar, July 9: A district court in Tripura’s Unakoti district has sentenced a man to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 after finding him guilty of stalking a woman. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional two months of imprisonment.
According to court sources, the convict, Foydur Rahman, was prosecuted in connection with a case registered at the Kailashahar Women Police Station in 2022.
During the trial, the prosecution stated that the accused had allegedly obtained the victim’s mobile phone number while working as a mason’s helper at her relative’s residence. After leaving the job, he repeatedly called and harassed the victim with abusive and obscene language. Even after his number was blocked, he allegedly continued contacting her using another phone number.
The prosecution further alleged that on May 25, 2022, at around 4:00 pm, the accused intercepted the woman while she was returning home from a driving school in the Kalipur area. He allegedly used obscene language, grabbed her hand, and attempted to force her onto his motorcycle. The victim managed to escape and informed her family, following which a complaint was lodged at the Kailashahar Women Police Station on May 27, 2022.
The investigation was conducted by Investigating Officer Mousumi Debbarma, who filed the charge sheet on June 14, 2022. During the trial, charges were framed under Sections 354D (stalking), 366, 511, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and five prosecution witnesses testified before the court.
After examining the evidence, District and Sessions Judge P. Kumar held that the prosecution successfully proved the offence under Section 354D IPC (stalking). However, the remaining charges were not established beyond reasonable doubt.
The court accordingly convicted Foydur Rahman under Section 354D IPC and sentenced him to one year of imprisonment along with a ₹10,000 fine, with an additional two months’ imprisonment in case of non-payment of the fine.
The prosecution was represented by Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb.
