Churaibari, Assam | April 15: In a major anti-drug operation on the first day of Bengali New Year, Assam Police seized a huge consignment of illegal cough syrup at Churaibari while it was being smuggled from Guwahati to Agartala.
According to official sources, the incident took place around 6:30 AM on Wednesday when a six-wheeler truck (AS26AC-1102) was intercepted at a naka checkpoint. The operation was led by officer Niranjan Das. During the search, police found the contraband cleverly concealed beneath a load of watermelons.
On opening the cartons, officials recovered a total of 95 cartons containing 14,250 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup. The estimated market value of the seized narcotics is around ₹1.43 crore, informed SDPO Anirban Sharma.
Two drivers have been arrested in connection with the case: Nazrul Islam from Barpeta district, Muslim Mia from Melaghar.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway. Police officials reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations against drug trafficking, noting that similar large-scale seizures have been recorded in recent times.
