Tripura, 19 feb 2026: A devastating fire broke out late Wednesday night at Champa Hawor Choumuhani in Khowai’s Office Tilla area, reducing at least 12 shops to ashes and causing losses worth several lakhs of rupees.
The fire reportedly started around midnight, sending flames rapidly through the market area. The affected establishments included grocery shops, auto-rickshaw spare parts stores, a beauty parlour, laundry units, and other small businesses. The sudden blaze created panic among local residents.
Upon receiving information, three fire tenders from the Khowai Fire Service rushed to the spot. The police administration also deployed a water cannon named ‘Varun’ to assist in controlling the flames. Due to the intensity of the fire, it took nearly two hours and the combined effort of four units to bring the situation under control.
Thanks to the coordinated response of the Fire Department, police personnel, and local residents, the fire was eventually contained, preventing it from spreading to nearby houses. Many locals stayed on the streets till around 2:30 AM, actively helping in firefighting and rescue operations.
Khowai Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) D. Kudrasu was present at the scene and reportedly took an active role in managing the situation.
Preliminary estimates suggest that property worth several lakhs has been destroyed. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, officials said.
The incident has left affected shop owners devastated, with many urging the government to provide financial assistance to help them recover from the losses.
