Anipur, Feb 11: A major bridge over the Singla River on the Anipur PWD road under Ramkrishnanagar Legislative Assembly Constituency in Assam collapsed suddenly on Wednesday, cutting off connectivity to a vast area and leaving at least four persons injured.
According to sources, the bridge gave way while several vehicles were passing over it. Two soil-laden dumpers, two Alto cars, a Bolero pickup, a motorcycle and a small truck were reportedly damaged in the incident. Local residents rushed to the spot and rescued those trapped beneath the debris before shifting them to Ramkrishnanagar Hospital.
The incident created panic across Anipur Bazaar and adjoining areas. Officials from the Disaster Management Department, along with civil administration and local representatives, reached the site to supervise rescue and relief operations.
Public Alleges Negligence
Residents alleged that the bridge had been in a fragile condition for the past six months and had shown visible signs of damage. Though repair work was reportedly carried out earlier, locals questioned its quality and claimed no proper monitoring or long-term strengthening measures were taken.
The collapse has disrupted movement towards Karimganj and Silchar, leaving commuters stranded. The situation has become more critical as examinations are underway in several schools in Anipur, including three major institutions with nearly 3,000 students. Guardians expressed concern over how students would reach their schools and exam centres.
Eyewitnesses said three injured persons were pulled out immediately after the collapse. One reportedly sustained serious injuries, while others suffered minor injuries. However, the administration later stated that two persons had sustained minor injuries and no major casualties were reported.
Inquiry Ordered
District authorities termed the incident a matter of investigation and confirmed that an inquiry has been ordered. Prima facie, officials indicated possible overloading of vehicles as a contributing factor, though the exact cause will be determined after the inquiry report.
As a precaution, one injured person was referred to Karimganj Civil Hospital and another to Silchar Medical College for advanced treatment.
Temporary Arrangements
To restore connectivity, authorities have initiated temporary measures. A bamboo footbridge is being planned to facilitate pedestrian movement. Additionally, four boats will be deployed free of cost on both sides of the river with assistance from SDRF personnel to ferry people across.
Officials assured that efforts are underway to restore normal traffic movement at the earliest.
The collapse has once again highlighted concerns over infrastructure safety and maintenance standards in the region.
