Tripura, 12 Feb 2026: A mysterious fire incident has triggered widespread concern at the Bagbasa Gram Panchayat office under the Yubarajnagar Block in North Tripura district. The devastating blaze broke out late Tuesday night, completely gutting the Panchayat office building.
According to sources, important official documents and furniture worth nearly ₹10 lakh were destroyed in the fire. Residents living near the Panchayat office reported being awakened by a loud sound in the middle of the night. Upon stepping outside, they saw flames engulfing the office premises. The matter was immediately reported to Panchayat in-charge Chittaranjan Debnath and the Fire Service Department in Dharmanagar.
A fire engine from the Dharmanagar Fire Service rushed to the spot. Firefighters, with the assistance of local residents, managed to bring the flames under control. However, by then, the entire office had been reduced to ashes. Police from Bagbasa Police Station arrived shortly after and initiated an investigation.
Panchayat in-charge Chittaranjan Debnath stated that he rushed to the scene after receiving information from a Panchayat member. However, he could not confirm the exact cause of the fire. He claimed that all vital records and valuable furniture were destroyed in the incident.
Gram Panchayat Pradhan Babul Debnath also confirmed the incident, stating that he found the entire office burnt down upon arrival. He refrained from commenting on the cause of the fire.
Preliminary findings from the Fire Department suggest that the blaze may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. However, the exact cause has not yet been officially confirmed.
Notably, there had been prior allegations of theft at the Bagbasa Gram Panchayat. With the financial year drawing to a close and March approaching, the incident has further deepened suspicions among locals.
On Wednesday morning, MLA Yadav Lal Nath of the Bagbasa Assembly Constituency visited the site. Later, through social media, he alleged that miscreants had deliberately set the office on fire, resulting in the destruction of all documents.
Following the MLA’s claim, intense speculation has gripped the area. Some locals involved in extinguishing the fire have questioned the allegation. Several residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that thorough questioning of the Panchayat in-charge and other concerned individuals by Bagbasa Police could help uncover the real cause of the mysterious blaze.
All eyes are now on the investigation by Bagbasa Police Station as residents await clarity on whether the true cause behind this mysterious fire will be uncovered.
