Dharmanagar, Feb 10: Residents of Ward No. 2 under Saraspur Gram Panchayat on Tuesday staged a road blockade demanding adequate drinking water supply, bringing normal movement to a halt in the Kurti–Kadamtala Assembly constituency area.
According to locals, men and women from the area took to the streets in the morning after facing prolonged water scarcity. They alleged that the water supply to the locality has been grossly insufficient for a long time. When contacted, the pump operator reportedly expressed his inability to resolve the issue.
The residents further claimed that the water pipelines installed in the area are of small diameter and have become clogged with iron deposits due to long-term use, resulting in disrupted water flow.
On receiving information, police from Kadamtala police station reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters. The agitators alleged that they were warned by police about possible legal action for staging the protest. Later, officials from the DWS (Drinking Water and Sanitation) department arrived at the site and held talks with the residents.
Following assurances from the department regarding steps to address the problem, the protesters withdrew the blockade, restoring normalcy in the area.
However, residents have demanded a permanent and immediate solution to the drinking water crisis to prevent such situations in the future.
