Bazarichara (Assam), February 6: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, police seized a large consignment of illegal intoxicant cough syrup from Rangamati area under Bazarichara in Assam and arrested the driver of the vehicle transporting the contraband.
According to police sources, a Tripura-registered Maruti Alto carrying narcotic cough syrup was attempting to travel towards Tripura using interior PWD roads instead of the national highway. The vehicle was intercepted at Bali Pipla Dewali in Rangamati by personnel of the Assam Police deployed under the AP Battalion during routine checking.

Following the interception, Bazarichara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Biswajyoti Deuri and Karimganj District Police Superintendent of Police Arnaban Sharma rushed to the spot. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 1,000 bottles of intoxicant cough syrup packed in 10 sacks.
Superintendent of Police Arnaban Sharma stated that the estimated black market value of the seized cough syrup is around ₹10 lakh. The arrested driver has been identified as Nitesh Das, a resident of the Rangamati area.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the source and intended destination of the contraband. Further probe is underway to identify other persons involved in the smuggling racket.
