Tripura, 05 Feb 2026: The Third District-level Saras Mela organised by the South Tripura District Mission Management Unit of Tripura Gramin Livelihood Mission (TGLM) commenced today at Vidyapith Ground, Belonia. The four-day-long fair will continue till February 8.
Inaugurating the Saras Mela, Cooperation Minister Sukla Charan Noatia said that there was a time when the country’s economy was weak, but due to the sincere efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s economy has regained strength. Emphasising the concept of “Vocal for Local”, he said that strengthening local products is key to boosting the national economy.
The Minister further stated that women empowerment is essential for economic prosperity, and the Saras Mela has been organised with this objective. Through such initiatives, rural livelihoods will grow, which in turn will strengthen both the State and national economy. He also mentioned that the number of ‘Lakhpati Didis’ in the State has increased significantly and efforts are underway to further enhance this number.
Speaking on the occasion, Belonia Municipal Council Chairperson Nikhil Chandra Gop highlighted the importance of such fairs in promoting self-help groups and local entrepreneurship.
Among others present at the programme were MLA Dipankar Sen, MLA Ashok Mitra, and Putul Pal Biswas, Chairperson of BC Nagar Panchayat Samiti. The programme was presided over by Deepak Dutta, Sabhadhipati of South Tripura Zilla Parishad, while the welcome address was delivered by Additional District Magistrate Mohammad Habiz Uddin.
A total of 27 stalls have been set up by various Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from across the district, along with three government stalls. The fair also features daily cultural programmes with performances by artists from within the State and outside.
