Tripura, 04 Feb 2026: In a democratic country like India, the role of the media is not limited merely to reporting news. It also plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion consciously, ensuring transparency, and establishing accountability of those in power. Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu stated this while inaugurating a felicitation programme for journalists at the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
The Governor said that reporting on the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly within the framework of law and the Constitution is a sacred responsibility. Accuracy, fairness, and a deep sense of commitment are indispensable in this duty, he added. Emphasising ethical standards, he noted that while the media enjoys constitutionally guaranteed freedom, maintaining moral responsibility is equally important. Verified news, fact-based reporting, and a strong sense of constitutional duty form the core foundation of credible journalism.
Calling upon journalists to act as guardians of truth, the Governor warned that fake news and unverified information are not merely professional lapses but can mislead the public and disrupt peace and social harmony.
The programme was also addressed by Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Ram Prasad Paul, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, MLA Rampada Jamatia, and MLA Birajit Sinha, among others. They highlighted the importance and role of the media in strengthening India’s democracy. The welcome address was delivered by A.K. Nath, Secretary of the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
On the occasion, the Governor felicitated several eminent journalists of the state. Those honoured included Srotoranjan Khisa, Shekhar Dutta, Bijoy Pal, Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Debraj Dey, Tanmay Chakraborty, Jayanta Bhowmik, Bhupal Chakraborty, Rahul Chowdhury, Pinaki Das, Shyamal Deb, Dhrubarajan Sen, Pintu Pal, Abhishek Dey, Ranjan Roy, Subrata Debnath, Abhishek Saha, Kinkar Shil, Shekhar Debbarma, and Amit Debbarma.
