Agartala Government Reaffirms Commitment to Modern Urban Services and Heritage Conservation
Tripura, 1 feb 2026: The state government is committed to connecting Agartala and other urban areas of the state with modern civic services to ensure that all basic amenities reach the people. Alongside upgrading urban infrastructure, the government is also focused on preserving the royal-era history of Agartala by restoring and reconstructing historically significant sites associated with the Manikya dynasty.
One such major initiative is the reconstruction of the historic Jackson Gate. The government aims to honour the state’s rich history and create opportunities for future generations to learn about Agartala’s royal heritage by restoring these landmark sites. Emphasising participatory governance, the state government intends to transform Agartala into a modern city by taking public opinion into account and working closely with citizens.

Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha made these remarks on Tuesday while laying the foundation stone for the reconstruction of Jackson Gate at the premises of Maharani Tulsibati Higher Secondary Girls’ School. On the same occasion, he also inaugurated the newly constructed two-storey Ward Office building of Agartala Municipal Corporation’s Ward No. 20.
The historic Jackson Gate was originally constructed during the reign of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur to welcome the then Governor of Bengal, Sir Francis Stanley Jackson, to Agartala. The Chief Minister stated that the laying of the foundation stone for its reconstruction is a strong step towards preserving and honouring Tripura’s past history and cultural heritage.
Highlighting various initiatives taken to improve urban services, Dr. Saha said that in 2025, under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, projects worth approximately ₹112 crore were inaugurated within the Agartala Municipal Corporation area under the Urban Development Department. Drinking water services have been expanded across multiple wards of the corporation. For economically weaker sections, flats are being provided under the Light House Project through the TUDA initiative.
The Chief Minister further informed that under the Agartala Smart City Mission, 65 projects have been completed at a cost of ₹581 crore. Due to consistent performance in urban development, Tripura has been awarded by the Central Government as a “Best Performer State.” Additionally, the state has received recognition as the “Most Clean State” for its performance under the Swachh Bharat Mission. He added that along with infrastructure development, the government is placing special emphasis on making women self-reliant in urban areas.
Addressing the gathering, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder said that under the Chief Minister’s guidance, development works are progressing steadily in Agartala, including both infrastructure upgradation and restoration of historical sites. He also mentioned that various ward offices under the Municipal Corporation are being renovated to better address public grievances and civic issues.
Among others who spoke at the programme were Central Zone Chairperson of Agartala Municipal Corporation Ratna Dutta and PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte. Urban Development Department Secretary Milind Ramteke and PWD Chief Engineer Rajib Majumder were also present. The welcome address was delivered by Agartala Municipal Corporation Commissioner Saju Wahid A.
