Agartala, November 28, 2025: Two important verdicts were delivered on November 25 by the Special POCSO Court No. 3 and the MACT Court No. 2 in West Tripura. Advocate Asmita Banik briefed the media on both judgments.
In the first case, Special POCSO Court No. 3 pronounced its judgment in Special POCSO Case No. 38/2022, concerning a sexual assault incident that occurred on 4 August 2022 under Srinagar Police Station. The accused, Sujit Debnath, aged 28, was found guilty of forcibly raping a minor girl who lived in his neighbourhood. He was convicted under Section 4 of the POCSO Act along with Sections 450, 376(1) and 506 of the IPC.
The court sentenced him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 under the POCSO Act, with one month of simple imprisonment in default. Under Section 450 of the IPC, he received five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹2,000, and under Section 506, he was sentenced to one year of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹500. A total of 21 witnesses were examined in the case, with IO Kajal Debnath receiving appreciation for conducting a thorough investigation supported by SFSL forensic reports. The court also directed that the victim should receive benefits under the Victim Compensation Scheme of the Legal Services Authority.
On the same day, MACT Court No. 2, presided over by Judge S. K. Singh, delivered judgment in TS(I) 314/2021, a death compensation case related to a bike accident that took place on 14 August 2021. The accident resulted in the death of Vijay Sarkar. His wife, son, mother and father had filed the claim, with Oriental Insurance Company Limited as the opposite party.
The family had sought compensation of ₹44,05,500, and the court awarded ₹38,50,000 along with six percent interest from the date of filing the petition. Advocate Banik stated that the judgment was delivered swiftly, ensuring justice and financial support for a family that had lost its primary breadwinner.
