Tripura, 20 Nov 2025: Two young children lost their lives in a tragic sand collapse at Kalyanpur on Thursday afternoon, exposing once again the deadly consequences of illegal sand mining in the area. The incident took place at Manik Chandra Para in Prem Sing ADC Village under Kalyanpur police station. Another child was seriously injured.
According to local sources, three children were playing near an old heap of sand stacked beside their house. Without warning, a large portion of the piled sand caved in, burying all three of them under the sudden collapse. Their fathers, who witnessed the horrifying scene, rushed in and managed to pull the children out after a desperate rescue attempt. They immediately brought them to the Kalyanpur Community Health Centre, where doctors declared two of them dead on arrival. The third child, in critical condition, was referred to Khowai District Hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief and anger across the locality. Residents allege that unscientific and illegal sand quarrying has been going on for a long time, right under the nose of the administration. “This tragedy could have been prevented if proper monitoring was in place,” a local resident said.
Upon receiving the news, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer and the Officer-in-Charge of Kalyanpur Police Station visited the spot. Police have confirmed that a case will be registered against those involved in the sand mining activities.
