Agartala: Nov 19. Residents of Sagram Para under Karbook block are fuming as the local Anganwadi centre has allegedly turned into a ghost centre open every morning, yet missing the one person who’s supposed to run it: the Anganwadi worker.
According to locals, worker Asharani Chakma has been skipping duties for months, comfortably drawing her salary from home. While the helper opens the centre on time, pre-primary education has come to a standstill due to the worker’s absence. Parents allege that even nutrition supplies under the ICDS scheme aren’t being distributed properly.

At times, Asharani reportedly sends some food items through her son, but beneficiaries claim this irregular system leaves many deprived of their rightful share.
Locals further allege that despite the prolonged negligence, the concerned department has taken no action, supposedly because Asharani’s husband, Gunban Chakma, is a leader of the ruling party giving her unofficial immunity to continue her absenteeism unchecked.
As a result, children in the area are missing out on early education, pushing parents to enroll them in private English-medium schools. Pregnant women too are reportedly being denied crucial nutrition support.
The villagers are now demanding strict action against the absentee worker and immediate restoration of Anganwadi services.
