Tripura, 18 Nov 2025: In a sweeping crackdown against illegal cannabis cultivation, the Sepahijala District Police on Tuesday carried out one of the biggest anti-ganja operations ever recorded in the district, destroying over 12 lakh ganja plants in a single day.
The operation was spearheaded by District Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma, who mobilised an extraordinary force of nearly 500 personnel drawn from five police stations, the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), the CRPF, and the Forest Department.

Starting at daybreak, teams fanned out simultaneously across the Bishalgarh, Bishramganj, Kalamchoura, Sonamura, and Melaghar police station areas. Personnel could be seen trekking through hilly terrain and dense fields as they pushed deeper into illegal plantation zones. For many local residents and even for cultivators involved in the trade the sight of such a massive force moving in was unprecedented.
Police officials said that this year, the district administration has taken up a special drive to make Sepahijala completely free of cannabis cultivation, and Tuesday’s coordinated effort marks a decisive step in that direction.
Speaking to reporters around 2:30 PM after the operation concluded, SP Bijoy Debbarma detailed the scale and strategy behind the day-long effort, calling it a “record-breaking and determined move” against narcotics networks that have been operating across parts of the district.

Chief Minister Applauds the Operation
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha lauded the effort on social media, noting that:
“In a major drive against the illegal cultivation of ganja, approximately 12 lakh saplings were destroyed in a joint operation. The drive was conducted by the CRPF, TSR, Forest Department, and the District Police Administration under the leadership of Shri Bijoy Debbarma, SP, Sepahijala. Our commitment to the fight against drugs remains steadfast.”
