Agartala: Nov 13. In a dramatic chase on Thursday afternoon, Assam Police seized a consignment of ganja worth around ₹2.5 crore that was being smuggled from Tripura to Assam.
According to reports, around 3:30 p.m., a Bolero pickup truck bearing registration no. TR05J-1807 carrying ganja disguised under boxes of frozen fish was intercepted near the Kathaltoli watch post under Bazaricherra police station. The vehicle was reportedly taking an alternate route through Patharkandi to evade detection.
When signaled to stop, the truck sped past the police barricade, forcing Officer-in-Charge Kabir Ahmed Barbhuiya and his team to pursue it. The vehicle also broke through another checkpoint at Sonakhira before being abandoned near the Sonakhira railway bridge, where the driver and his associate fled the scene.
Later, under the supervision of CO-ASP Anirban Sharma, Bazarichara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anand Medhi, and SI Prabhakar Choudhury, a search of the vehicle revealed several packets of dried ganja concealed beneath fish cartons weighing approximately five quintals in total.
Police estimate the market value of the seized contraband to be around ₹2.5 crore. Authorities have launched an investigation to trace the owner of the vehicle and identify those involved in the smuggling network.
However, questions are now being raised as to how a truck loaded with such a massive quantity of contraband managed to cross Tripura’s Churaibari check post without detection, sparking concerns about possible lapses or negligence by Tripura Police.
