Agartala: Oct 27. In a major anti-narcotics operation, Damcherra Police seized a large consignment of Burmese cigarettes from the forested area near the Longai River in Charai Bung on Monday afternoon. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Officer-in-Charge Sanjay Majumder conducted a raid and recovered eight cartons of Burmese cigarettes, estimated to be worth around Rs 8-10 lakh in the black market.
Police suspect that the cigarettes had been stockpiled in the forest area for illegal smuggling across the border. OC Sanjay Majumder said, “We had reliable information that some smugglers were planning to move Burmese cigarettes through the Longai River route. Acting on the tip, we launched the operation and successfully seized the consignment.”
The recovered cigarettes have been brought to the police station for safekeeping, and further investigation is underway to trace the smuggling network and the routes used. OC Majumder added that anti-smuggling drives will continue in the coming days.
