Agartala, Nov 4 : The Left Front and the Congress are continuing negotiations over a seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, with both sides seeking to prevent a division of anti-BJP votes and mount a united opposition challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said on Wednesday that several rounds of discussions had taken place between the two parties, but a final agreement was yet to be reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leaders from both camps have been engaged in consultations over the past few days to resolve differences relating to seat allocation and candidate selection, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chaudhury said negotiations between two independent political organisations with separate structures, priorities and political considerations were not always easy. Local electoral equations and the aspirations of party workers at the ward level had further complicated the process, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the delay, both parties remained committed to arriving at a common understanding, he said, adding that their primary objective was to ensure that anti-BJP votes were not divided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding to questions about the Left Front filing nominations in constituencies initially kept aside for the Congress, Chaudhury said the move should not be viewed as a setback to the negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Left Front had initially kept 26 seats open, expecting the Congress to field its candidates there under a possible electoral understanding, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, with the nomination deadline approaching, the Left leadership decided against leaving those constituencies uncontested, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision to file nominations was a precautionary step to prevent the BJP from gaining an advantage in the absence of opposition candidates, Chaudhury said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He clarified that the nomination process and seat-sharing negotiations were proceeding simultaneously. If an agreement was reached before the completion of the nomination process, the Left Front would be willing to withdraw candidates wherever necessary to facilitate a joint opposition strategy, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking a swipe at the ruling BJP, Chaudhury said differences over candidate selection were not confined to opposition parties. The BJP had also faced protests and dissatisfaction in some areas following the announcement of its candidate list, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reiterating that opposition unity remained the Left Front’s priority, the CPI(M) leader said his party was prepared to make necessary adjustments to achieve a broader consensus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the nomination deadline approaching, the outcome of the talks is expected to determine the nature of the opposition’s contest against the BJP in the civic polls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
