Agartala, Oct 27<\/strong> : The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday launched a Rs 1.5-crore project to renovate and beautify a pond adjacent to Women’s College in Ward No. 22, aiming to improve urban infrastructure, preserve waterbodies and enhance public spaces in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foundation stone for the project was laid at Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani in the presence of Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, Ward No. 22 Councillor Himani Debbarma and other dignitaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to civic officials, the project will involve the renovation of the pond and comprehensive development of its surroundings to create an attractive, clean and well-maintained public space. The initiative is also intended to improve environmental conditions in the locality and contribute to Agartala’s urban renewal efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the gathering, Majumder said the municipal corporation had been working over the past several years to improve civic services, address residents’ concerns and make the city cleaner and more beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to the problem of waterlogging, the mayor said several areas that earlier experienced severe inundation even after brief spells of rain had witnessed considerable improvement following the installation of pumping systems and the implementation of other drainage-related measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the civic body would take further steps to strengthen the city’s drainage network and tackle waterlogging more effectively, particularly during the monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Majumder also appealed to residents to cooperate with the municipal authorities in maintaining cleanliness and ensuring proper waste disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged people to use designated garbage disposal points and the AMC’s door-to-door waste collection service instead of dumping refuse in open spaces, drains and waterbodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improper disposal of waste can obstruct drainage channels and aggravate waterlogging during the rainy season, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emphasising the importance of public participation, the mayor said sustained improvements in civic infrastructure and sanitation required active cooperation from residents alongside the efforts of the municipal corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also highlighted the AMC’s initiatives to clean, restore and rejuvenate neglected ponds and other waterbodies across Agartala. These efforts are aimed at preserving natural resources, improving the urban environment and developing waterbodies as community assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Women’s College pond project forms part of the corporation’s broader efforts to combine urban beautification with environmental conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
