Agartala, October 21:<\/strong> An alleged assault on journalist Abhijit Bhattacharya and his son in Ramnagar has sparked widespread condemnation across Tripura. The incident reportedly took place late on the night of October 20 near Yuba Sangha Club on Ramnagar Road No. 1. A case has been registered at West Agartala Police Station, and one person has reportedly been detained. Police have assured that efforts are underway to apprehend the other accused.

According to the complaint, a cultural programme was underway at Yuba Sangha Club at around 1:10 am on October 21. Despite part of the road being clear, bamboo poles had allegedly been placed across the road, obstructing movement. After Abhijit Bhattacharya’s wife and son passed through the area on foot, he reportedly moved the bamboo barrier and attempted to proceed on his motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point, a group of young men allegedly drinking in a nearby lane began abusing him in obscene language before physically attacking him, according to the allegations.

When Bhattacharya’s son attempted to record the assault on his mobile phone, the attackers allegedly snatched the device and smashed it on the road. He was also reportedly assaulted. Both father and son sustained injuries and were subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, the journalist informed the police and sought legal action against those responsible.

Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder visited IGM Hospital after learning about the incident and enquired about the condition of the injured. On Wednesday morning, Press Club president Pranab Sarkar also visited Bhattacharya at his residence and expressed concern over the incident.

The alleged attack has drawn condemnation from members of the media fraternity and others, with calls for adequate protection for journalists and strict legal action against those involved.

According to police sources, one person has already been detained. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Sadar, reportedly stated that further steps would be taken to arrest the remaining accused after the immersion of Durga idols is completed.

Names of several alleged accused have reportedly surfaced in connection with the case, including Samrat Deb, Baba Manik Deb, Debashish Bhattacharya, Shubham Karmakar, Mrityunjay Bhattacharya, Abhijit Barman and Supradip Gupta. Their alleged involvement remains subject to investigation, and the allegations have not been established in court.

The incident has also raised questions about compliance with restrictions on loudspeakers and late-night cultural programmes. Questions have been raised over how the event allegedly continued with loudspeakers until around 1:20 am despite reported police instructions prohibiting high-volume loudspeaker use after midnight. Questions have also emerged over whether the organisers had the necessary permissions to conduct the programme at that hour.

The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, identify everyone involved and determine whether the event complied with the applicable rules and permissions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
