Tripura, 21 Oct 2026<\/strong>: A 17-year-old boy was killed and another teenager sustained critical injuries in a road accident near Loknath Ashram at Chakmaghat under Teliamura Police Station on Tuesday night, coinciding with Maha Navami celebrations. The incident occurred on the Assam-Agartala National Highway in the Krishnapur Assembly constituency.

The deceased has been identified as Jit Sarkar, 17, while the injured teenager, Deep Choudhury, 17, is currently undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala.

According to preliminary reports, the two teenagers were travelling on a red scooter from Teliamura towards Chakmaghat at high speed when the vehicle reportedly went out of control near Loknath Ashram. Eyewitnesses said the scooter allegedly crashed into a vehicle parked by the roadside or a large banyan tree. The impact was severe, leaving the scooter badly damaged and both riders seriously injured on the highway.

Hearing the loud crash, local residents rushed to the spot and found the two teenagers lying in a pool of blood. Personnel from the Teliamura Fire and Emergency Services department soon arrived and rescued the injured boys before taking them to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital.

However, the attending doctors declared Jit Sarkar dead on arrival. As Deep Choudhury’s condition was critical, he was referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.

The tragic incident has raised concerns over underage driving, speeding and parental supervision during the festive season. Questions have also been raised about how two 17-year-olds were able to ride a scooter on a national highway and whether they were wearing helmets or possessed valid driving licences.

The role of traffic enforcement in preventing such incidents has also come under scrutiny.

Police have initiated an investigation into the accident, and the damaged scooter has reportedly been seized.
