Agartala, October 6:<\/strong> The Tripura High Court has directed the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to submit detailed information on teacher vacancies in schools under its jurisdiction, including the number of single-teacher High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao and Justice S Datta Purkayastha issued the direction while hearing a suo motu public interest litigation, WP(C)(PIL) No. 09 of 2026, Court on its own motion vs Union of India and Others<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bench impleaded the TTAADC, through its Chief Executive Officer, as a respondent and directed it to file a counter affidavit on the issues concerning the availability of teachers in tribal areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The council has been asked to provide comprehensive data on vacant teaching posts in schools under its jurisdiction and explain why contractual teachers were being engaged instead of making regular appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It has also been directed to furnish specific details about single-teacher schools and the classes and levels affected by the shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The directions came as the court examined the wider issue of teacher vacancies in government schools across Tripura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Figures submitted by the state government showed that 15,449 teacher posts became vacant between 2018-19 and 2023-24 due to retirements and terminations. During the same period, only 6,659 appointments were made, resulting in a shortfall of nearly 9,000 teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bench also took note of the recruitment process undertaken by the Teachers’ Recruitment Board, Tripura (TRBT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n It observed that the TRBT had advertised 700 Graduate Teacher posts in September 2025, while no fresh recruitment advertisement for Graduate Teachers had been issued in 2026 so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The court urged the state government and the recruitment board to take urgent measures to fill the vacant posts, stressing the importance of adequate teaching staff for the effective functioning of government schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bench also reviewed the availability of basic infrastructure in schools based on UDISE 2025-26 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the figures, electricity connections were available in 84 per cent of schools, while drinking water facilities were available in 4,048 of 4,144 schools.
