Agartala, October 4: A small vermicompost venture launched in 2019 has grown into a diversified rural enterprise for Junu Bala Roy, a member of Joy Ram Self-Help Group under Natun Alo CLF, who has now been recognised as a ‘Lakhpati Didi’.

Roy started producing vermicompost with limited resources and gradually expanded her activities with the help of loans through community-based organisations and specialised training from RUDSETI under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM).

She currently operates 30 vermicompost pits and supplies organic fertiliser to farmers. Over the years, she has diversified her enterprise into seed trading, vegetable cultivation and fishery, creating multiple sources of income.

During peak seasons, her monthly sales exceed Rs 5 lakh, while profits are estimated at between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh, according to details of her enterprise.

The business has also created livelihood opportunities for six other self-help group members, allowing Roy to generate employment alongside expanding her own enterprise.

Her journey demonstrates how access to credit, skill development and support from self-help group networks can help rural women expand small livelihood activities into sustainable enterprises.

The training provided by RUDSETI helped Roy develop skills in vermicompost production and enterprise management, while financial assistance facilitated through community-based organisations helped her increase the scale of operations.

After establishing the vermicompost unit, Roy gradually added seed trading, vegetable cultivation and fishery to her activities. The diversification has helped her create multiple income streams and meet demand for agricultural inputs and produce in the local area.

Roy now plans to expand her vermicompost production unit and further scale up the enterprise.

Her experience also illustrates the potential of self-help group-based livelihood programmes to create employment and strengthen the economic participation of rural women.

The ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative aims to enable women members of self-help groups to achieve annual household incomes of at least Rs 1 lakh through sustainable and diversified livelihood activities.

Roy’s enterprise has grown through a combination of training, access to institutional finance and community support.

The employment generated by her venture has also provided other SHG members with opportunities to participate in income-generating activities.

For Roy, the next step is to increase vermicompost production and expand the enterprise, with the aim of creating further livelihood opportunities within the community.

Her journey from a small-scale vermicompost producer to a diversified entrepreneur underlines the role of organised support systems in helping rural women build sustainable livelihoods.
