Agartala, September 27:<\/strong> The convoy of former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar was allegedly prevented from proceeding to a party programme in Bamutia on Sunday, with the CPI(M) claiming that an escort vehicle was damaged during the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alleged incident took place at Kalibazar in the Bamutia area around 10 am, when Sarkar was travelling to attend a CPI(M) organisational conference, party leaders said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the CPI(M), a group of people gathered on the road and stopped the convoy, resulting in Sarkar being unable to proceed for nearly 40 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The party further alleged that one of the vehicles accompanying the former chief minister was vandalised during the confrontation. CPI(M) leaders claimed that the persons involved had the backing of the BJP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The allegations were not independently verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPI(M) supporters, including members of the party\u2019s youth wing, subsequently reached the area, according to party accounts. The situation remained tense for some time before the group allegedly blocking the road dispersed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarkar then continued his journey and reached the venue, where he addressed the organisational conference as planned, party leaders said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CPI(M) criticised the alleged obstruction and described it as an attempt to disrupt the activities of opposition leaders ahead of the Village Committee elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident occurred a day before polling for the Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Political parties have been conducting campaign and organisational activities across the council areas in the run-up to the polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CPI(M) has previously alleged incidents of political intimidation and violence during the election process and demanded adequate security for candidates, workers and political leaders. The ruling alliance has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alleged incident has also raised questions about security arrangements for senior political leaders during the election period and the measures being taken to maintain law and order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CPI(M) said authorities should ensure that political parties are able to conduct meetings and organisational activities without obstruction and that voters and candidates can participate in the electoral process peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarkar, who served as Tripura chief minister for over two decades, remains involved in CPI(M) organisational activities and election-related programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No immediate official account of the incident was available. It was also not immediately clear whether any police complaint had been lodged over the alleged damage to the escort vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
