Agartala, September 22:<\/strong> A long-neglected stretch of the Haora River has received a major urban makeover with the completion of a 1.7-km riverfront project, inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Built at an estimated cost of Rs 96 crore under the Agartala Smart City Mission, the riverfront runs from Steel Bridge to Dashamighat and has been developed with a focus on river protection, recreation and improved civic amenities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saha said the Haora is an inseparable part of Agartala\u2019s history and heritage and stressed that urban development must go hand in hand with conservation of the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing the new facility as a space for citizens of different age groups, the Chief Minister said the riverfront provides opportunities for recreation and leisure while contributing to the city\u2019s beautification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project also incorporates a five-year operation and maintenance provision, with the associated expenditure included in its overall cost, Saha said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlighting its environmental benefits, he said the strengthened banks would help tackle erosion along the Haora River and minimise risks arising from damage to the riverbanks. He also indicated that the riverfront could be expanded further in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saha recalled that the area had earlier been vulnerable to anti-social activities but had now been converted into a public-oriented space. He credited the Smart City Mission for enabling Agartala to undertake such urban infrastructure projects and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for including the city under the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chief Minister also inaugurated Airport Road virtually during the programme. Both the road project and the riverfront development were taken up under the Smart City Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also laid the foundation stone for a marriage hall planned for the Agartala Municipal Corporation area, which is intended to provide affordable facilities to economically weaker sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saha said the government was continuing to identify new measures to improve public services and living conditions, while giving importance to both infrastructure development and socio-economic progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder said the inauguration marked an important occasion in Agartala\u2019s urban development. Calling the Haora the \u201csoul\u201d of the city, he said the civic body was undertaking multiple initiatives to protect the river and improve its surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Majumder said urban management systems were being strengthened in response to changing needs and that the corporation was working to address issues such as traffic congestion and pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Durga Puja approaching, the Mayor said government departments were coordinating preparations to ensure smooth and safe celebrations. He also assured residents that road repair works would be completed before the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A blood donation camp was held as part of the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the inauguration, Saha and other dignitaries inspected the facilities developed along the riverfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, Chief Minister\u2019s Secretary Kiran Gitte, Urban Development Secretary Milind Ramteke, Agartala Smart City Mission CEO G.S.
