Agartala, September 10:<\/strong> The monsoon has brought renewed attention to the deteriorating condition of the Pecharthal-Nabincherra section of the Assam-Agartala National Highway in Unakoti district, where potholes, mud and waterlogging are reportedly disrupting regular traffic and causing considerable inconvenience to commuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The affected stretch has become particularly difficult to negotiate following rainfall. Commuters said rainwater accumulates inside several potholes, concealing their depth and making it difficult for motorists to identify damaged portions of the road. As a result, vehicles are being driven at reduced speeds, while some reportedly become stuck in the worst-affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Local drivers said the road has remained in poor condition for more than six months. Although repair activities have reportedly been carried out at different points, commuters claimed that the measures have failed to withstand continued traffic and monsoon weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Toto driver Anupam Chakma said the situation becomes considerably worse during heavy rain. According to him, traffic movement slows sharply and vehicles can remain stuck in queues for long periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said the problem is particularly serious when patients have to be taken to hospitals through the affected route, as delays and poor road conditions make emergency transportation difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gautam Nama, another Toto driver, said deep potholes have become a regular hazard. He alleged that vehicles frequently get stuck or sustain damage to tyres and mechanical parts while negotiating the road. The cost of repeated repairs, he said, is placing additional pressure on local drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nama also alleged that repair work carried out from time to time has largely been temporary and that potholes reappear after periods of heavy rainfall and regular vehicle movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jamal Uddin, another driver, urged the authorities to undertake a permanent solution and restore the damaged portions instead of relying on repeated temporary repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Residents have also expressed concerns about the quality of road maintenance. Some locals alleged that contractors have failed to maintain the required standards and raised questions over the execution and durability of repair works.
