From circulation areas to academic spaces and emergency facilities, the planning places considerable emphasis on creating an environment where women students and employees can study and work with greater confidence.

Architect Lourdu Rajulton A has developed the campus around the principle that safety should be incorporated into the architecture itself rather than added later as a separate facility.

One of the most prominent aspects of the design is the emphasis on visibility. Classrooms and corridors are planned with access to natural light and clear sightlines, helping minimise concealed or isolated spaces. The approach is intended to create a more open campus environment while supporting safety and comfort.

The project also acknowledges the needs of women balancing professional responsibilities with childcare. Dedicated nursing rooms have been incorporated into the campus plan, providing facilities for working mothers. A separate women’s common room near the academic areas is also planned as a convenient space for interaction, relaxation and support.

Emergency preparedness forms another component of the design. Strategically placed emergency exits are expected to provide quicker evacuation routes in case of an emergency, reinforcing the campus’s safety-oriented planning.

But the MIPS concept extends beyond women-centric facilities. The campus has been designed to encourage a more participatory form of education, with open-air classrooms intended to create greater opportunities for interaction between teachers and students.

Multiple common areas will provide spaces for students to meet, collaborate and exchange ideas outside conventional classrooms. Natural ventilation has also been incorporated into the design to improve indoor comfort and create a healthier learning environment.

The relationship between academic and administrative areas has likewise been reconsidered. Instead of keeping the two functions completely separate, the design places the library within the administrative block and locates faculty and heads of departments within the academic building.

The integrated layout is expected to make faculty and academic leadership more accessible and encourage regular interaction among students, teachers and administrators.

For Tripura, the project represents more than the construction of a new pharmaceutical college. Its planning reflects an attempt to rethink how educational institutions can respond to the practical requirements of their users, particularly women entering higher education and professional careers.

By bringing together safety features, childcare support, open learning environments, common spaces and integrated institutional functions, MIPS aims to create a campus that is both functional and people-oriented.

The project could also provide a broader reference point for future educational infrastructure, demonstrating how women’s safety and participation can be considered from the earliest stages of architectural planning.

As the MIPS campus takes shape in Udaipur, its significance is therefore not limited to its scale. Its larger message lies in the attempt to combine pharmaceutical education with a campus environment designed around dignity, accessibility and empowerment.

For Tripura, the institute could ultimately emerge as a distinctive example of how architecture and education can come together to create a more inclusive learning environment.

Agartala, September 9: A new chapter in Tripura’s higher education sector is taking shape in Udaipur, where the upcoming Milestones Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) is being designed to combine a large institutional footprint with an approach centred on safety, accessibility and inclusiveness.
