Lucknow, August 25:<\/strong> The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday organised its second Regional Conference on \u201cElectoral Literacy Club (ELC 2.0) and ECINET\u201d in Lucknow, with a focus on strengthening electoral literacy and democratic awareness among young citizens through educational institutions.

Addressing students and teachers from schools and colleges across Uttar Pradesh, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar described students as the future of the nation and emphasised the important role of Electoral Literacy Clubs in passing knowledge and understanding of the electoral process to the next generation and strengthening democracy.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar said elections in India are conducted strictly in accordance with the Constitution, laws and instructions issued by the Election Commission of India. He noted that transparency is maintained at every stage of the electoral process through parallel monitoring by political parties, candidates and their representatives.

He stressed the need to familiarise students and young voters with India\u2019s electoral system, democratic values, voter registration, the voting and counting processes, as well as the role and functioning of the Election Commission.

Highlighting the importance of engaging young citizens, Kumar said their confidence in and informed participation in the electoral process represents an investment in the future of democracy.

With the motto \u201cLearn Democracy. Lead Democracy,\u201d ELC 2.0 seeks not only to educate young and first-time voters about democracy but also to encourage them to participate meaningfully and contribute to strengthening democratic processes.

Earlier in the day, Kumar visited his alma mater, Colvin Taluqdar’s College, where he interacted with teachers and students. On the second day of his Uttar Pradesh visit, the CEC is scheduled to interact with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) of the state.

Under ELC 2.0, Electoral Literacy Clubs in schools, colleges and universities will be developed as more organised, visible and digitally enabled platforms. The initiative will facilitate year-round activities aimed at increasing electoral awareness among young citizens and encouraging them to spread awareness within their families, educational institutions and communities.

ELC 2.0 will leverage the wider ECINET digital platform, through which various election-related services, from electoral rolls to the voting process, will be made accessible through a single platform. A dedicated ELC portal within ECINET will facilitate the creation of a structured ELC network across the country.

The initiative assumes particular significance given India\u2019s vast educational network. The country has around 15 lakh schools with nearly 25 crore students and more than one crore teachers. In higher education, there are around 1,500 universities and nearly 70,000 institutions, with approximately 4.33 crore students.

Through this extensive institutional network, ELC 2.0 aims to promote information-based and experiential electoral education, enhance awareness about the transparency, impartiality and credibility of India\u2019s electoral system, and develop young citizens as ambassadors of informed democratic participation.

The ELCs will also serve as platforms for disseminating information about different stages of the electoral process, including voter registration, voting and counting. They will also provide information on the ECINET App and other key initiatives of the Election Commission of India.
