Agartala, August 10, 2026:<\/strong> The Tripura government has stepped up efforts to complete road maintenance and repair works across the state ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations, with authorities instructed to ensure both timely completion and quality of work.

Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Kiran Gitte said this at a press conference at the Civil Secretariat on Monday, stating that all identified road maintenance works have been targeted for completion by September 30.

Gitte said the issue was reviewed in detail during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha at the TIFT war room on August 8. Officials from the PWD, National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and other concerned departments presented district-wise progress reports and action plans.

The Chief Minister directed the concerned agencies to complete road maintenance works before Durga Puja while maintaining the required quality standards.

According to the PWD Secretary, under the PWD (R&B), maintenance is currently being carried out on 1,006 roads covering 1,622 km. These works are targeted for completion by September 30.

Similarly, 119 roads covering 665 km under PWD (PMGSY) and 32 roads covering 377 km under PWD (NH) are also scheduled to be completed within the same deadline.

Together, the three PWD wings will undertake maintenance work on 1,157 roads covering approximately 2,664 km.

National Highway Maintenance Underway

Providing details of National Highway maintenance, Gitte said NHIDCL is currently carrying out maintenance work on a 16-km stretch of NH-08 from Champaknagar to Nalgaria Railway Bridge.

Maintenance work is also underway on:

* NH-108B: 38 km from Khowai to Agartala

* NH-208: 80.2 km from Khowai to Kailashahar

* NH-08: 105.9 km from Churaibari to Agartala


The stretch from Nalgaria Railway Bridge to ISBT Chandrapur will be maintained by the PWD (R&B).

Gitte acknowledged that road maintenance work has been affected to some extent by continuous rainfall since March this year. Prolonged rain has resulted in the formation of potholes on several roads across the state. However, he said adequate funds are available with the department for carrying out the necessary maintenance works.

Priority to Roads Connecting Key Locations

The government will give special priority to roads connecting district headquarters, subdivision headquarters, bus stands, railway stations, hospitals and major Durga Puja venues.

Gitte said the movement of people increases significantly around important locations during Durga Puja, and therefore maintenance of roads serving these areas will be expedited to ensure smoother and safer movement.

He also stressed that there would be no compromise on the quality of road maintenance works. Officials have been instructed to take necessary action wherever works are found to be inadequate.

Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, Assistant Engineers and Junior Engineers have been directed to regularly inspect work sites and review both the quality and progress of maintenance activities.

Follow-up Review Held

Following the August 8 high-level meeting, a follow-up meeting was held on August 10 at Conference Hall-3 of the Civil Secretariat, chaired by the PWD Secretary.

The meeting reviewed the progress of road maintenance across different districts, the status of ongoing works and measures required to ensure completion within the stipulated deadline.

The state government said the initiative aims to keep road connectivity functional despite the challenges posed by the monsoon and to make travel easier and safer for people ahead of Durga Puja.

The government has reiterated its commitment to improving Tripura’s road infrastructure and ensuring smoother connectivity for the public.
