Agartala, 9 August 2026<\/strong>: A debate over representation, recognition and inclusivity within indigenous society unfolded on social media on Sunday, coinciding with the observance of the International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion involved Rajesh Debbarma, former MLA and present Member of the District Council of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), who was also the Convener of the programme, and Dr. Sunil Kalai, academician, filmmaker, writer and cultural activist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as a personal social media exchange quickly developed into a wider discussion on whether programmes organised to celebrate and represent indigenous communities should provide greater space to academicians, scholars, journalists, indigenous media organisations, filmmakers, writers, social activists and cultural practitioners, alongside elected representatives and community leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Maharaja\u2019s absence, no leader remember us\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion began with a post by Dr. Sunil Kalai, who expressed concern over what he described as the neglect of sections of indigenous society in the absence of the Maharaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his original post, Kalai wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Maharaja\u2019s absence, no leader remember us. Sometimes people should know that we exist. Ours is the only community where we try to pull down one another. As a human being at times we feel neglected. We all need space to live and breath. Rajeshwar Debbarma, don\u2019t divide people, you cannot neglect me. If you always play on the basis of community or creed, minority like us have no where to go. We need leaders who are inclusive not leaders who are divisive. Every act of ours will be rewarded by the right answers at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalai subsequently clarified that his concern was not about his individual position or personal recognition, but about a much larger section of indigenous society whose contributions, according to him, often remain unacknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rajesh Debbarma: \u201cAll are cordially invited\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to Kalai\u2019s post, Rajesh Debbarma stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo one neglects you. All are cordially invited to attend today\u2019s event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalai responded by questioning whether he had been personally contacted and whether the organisers had made efforts to involve people from different sections of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid you at least call me once, or is there no other way out of the box to take other responsibilities by calling from various sections of society and giving space to all?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He questioned whether society could function only through political representatives and reminded elected leaders that they occupy public positions through the mandate of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalai also urged political representatives and the administration to recognise the contributions of people from different fields, particularly academicians working on indigenous issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKindly learn to acknowledge the contribution and work of all people from various fields, specially the academicians; and the administration needs to accept this. Take this as an eye opener to politicians like you,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debbarma says community heads were invited<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding again, Debbarma maintained that the programme had invited heads of Tiprasa communities, including Kalai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll the heads of our Tiprasa communities including Kalai are graciously invited to attend the event with great honour and they have graced the event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalai, however, argued that the issue went beyond the invitation of community heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut you excluded the academicians\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his subsequent response, Kalai questioned whether academicians actively working on indigenous issues had been included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut you excluded the academicians. Did you include one academician who are serving and working on this field?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also asked whether social activists such as Brother Anthony, indigenous filmmakers and other activists had been invited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalai questioned whether an event concerning indigenous society should not include people who have spent years working in education, research, media, cinema, literature, social activism and cultural preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It is not about my individual issue; it is about us\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining his position, Kalai said the discussion should not be reduced to a question of whether he personally had been invited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed to the wider community of people involved in indigenous media, journalism, filmmaking, scholarship, writing and cultural activism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Kalai, Kokborok news channels and other indigenous media organisations have been working to highlight indigenous issues and promote the interests of indigenous communities. Similarly, academicians and scholars have contributed through research and documentation, while filmmakers and writers have worked to preserve indigenous stories, language, history and cultural traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that such people could have been acknowledged and felicitated as part of the International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples, even through a small token of appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concern over political-centric celebration<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major issue raised by Kalai was what he described as the political-centric nature of the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that while elected representatives have an important role, an indigenous community is much larger than its political leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, important occasions should provide space to politicians as well as academicians, intellectuals, media practitioners, filmmakers, writers, activists, cultural workers and youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further argued that the TTAADC is a public institution and not merely an institution belonging to elected members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEqual participation is needed from other sections, not only politicians,\u201d Kalai maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also questioned whether public programmes funded or organised through public institutions should be treated as platforms primarily for political representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sharper political exchange<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion became more pointed when Kalai questioned the political motivation and public-service commitment of political leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He asked whether politicians would continue working for society if they were no longer holding political office. He also questioned Debbarma\u2019s political journey and alleged that political party changes had been connected with electoral ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social media exchange has now evolved into a broader conversation about who gets recognised as a contributor to indigenous society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Kalai, recognition should not be determined solely by political position. He argues that a filmmaker documenting indigenous stories, a journalist running a Kokborok media platform, an academic researching indigenous culture, an author documenting language, or an activist working at the grassroots is also contributing to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question, therefore, is whether such contributions should receive formal recognition on occasions dedicated to indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Indigenous Peoples Day adds significance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing of the debate is significant as it took place on 9 August 2026, when communities across the world observe the International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The occasion traditionally provides an opportunity to reflect on indigenous peoples\u2019 rights, identity, languages, cultures, knowledge systems, dignity and participation in decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this backdrop, the social media debate in Tripura has raised a local but important question: How inclusive should indigenous representation be within public programmes and institutions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion has brought into focus the need to recognise not only political leadership but also the wider ecosystem of people working for indigenous society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A call for broader participation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debate ultimately points towards a larger demand for inclusive representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than viewing political leadership and civil society contributions as competing spaces, Kalai\u2019s argument is that both can coexist and strengthen one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political representatives have a democratic mandate, while academicians, media practitioners, filmmakers, writers, activists and cultural workers contribute through their professional and social engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The controversy therefore offers an opportunity for future programmes to consider a more representative model\u2014one where political leaders, community representatives, academicians, indigenous media, filmmakers, writers, activists, cultural practitioners and young people all have a meaningful place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
