Tripura, August 6: <\/strong>Fresh concerns have emerged over the availability of basic medical facilities at the RGM Sub-Divisional Hospital in Kailashahar after a patient’s family alleged that the hospital did not have a thermometer to check the temperature of an 11-month-old child admitted with a high fever.

According to Shipra Shuklabaidya, a resident of Ward No. 3 under Chandipur Assembly Constituency, her 11-month-old grandnephew had been suffering from fever for four to five days. The child was taken to the hospital around 11 PM and admitted through the emergency department.

She alleged that after admission, the family was initially informed that no bed was available before one was later arranged. However, they claimed that the hospital staff prescribed injections and treatment without first measuring the child’s body temperature because a thermometer was reportedly unavailable.

The family further alleged that they were asked to arrange a thermometer themselves. Around 1 AM, they purchased one from a nearby pharmacy, after which the child’s temperature was measured at 102\u2013103\u00b0F, they claimed.

Shuklabaidya also alleged that some nursing staff were reluctant to use the thermometer purchased by the family and informed them that the hospital did not have one available.

Expressing disappointment, the family questioned how a government hospital could function without such a basic medical instrument. “If we have to buy even a thermometer ourselves, what is the purpose of coming to a government hospital?” she said, adding that poor families depend on public healthcare because they cannot afford private treatment.

The allegations have sparked criticism among local residents, who have called for an inquiry into the matter and urged the Health Department to ensure that all government hospitals are adequately equipped with essential medical supplies.
