Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, August 2, 2026: <\/strong>A devastating avalanche on Broad Peak (8,047 metres) in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region has claimed the lives of all 10 members of an international mountaineering expedition, including renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja.

Purja, 43, was one of the most celebrated figures in modern mountaineering. He gained worldwide recognition after becoming the fastest person to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks, completing the feat in a record 189 days under his landmark Project Possible. His extraordinary achievement was later documented in the Netflix film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.

The multinational expedition entered the Broad Peak region on June 29, 2026, with climbers representing the United Kingdom, Nepal, the United States, Oman, China and Pakistan. According to officials, the team was ascending between Camp II and Camp III on July 30 when a powerful avalanche struck at an altitude of approximately 6,600\u20137,000 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following several days of intensive search operations under extreme weather conditions, rescue teams led by the Pakistan Army, assisted by experienced high-altitude climbers and Sherpas, recovered the bodies of all expedition members, including Purja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victims have been identified as Sarah Mallory Geis (United States), Pur Bahadur Gurung (Nepal), Nirmal Purja (United Kingdom\/Nepal), Nawang Thindhu Sherpa (Nepal), Gyalu Sherpa (Nepal), Nima Sherpa (Nepal), Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy (Oman), Wang Zhong (China), Kili Pemba (Nepal), and Suhail Shahzad (Pakistan).

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the global mountaineering community. Tributes have poured in from climbers, adventure organizations and admirers worldwide, remembering Purja not only for his record-breaking accomplishments but also for his leadership, resilience and commitment to advancing high-altitude mountaineering.

Authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan have expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and commended the rescue teams for carrying out one of the most challenging recovery operations in the Karakoram under severe weather and high-altitude conditions.
