Agartala, 1st August 2026<\/strong>: Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Asmita Dey<\/strong> from Tripura delivered an emotional tribute to her late father after creating history by winning the women’s 48kg judo gold medal.

Holding back tears, Asmita said the biggest inspiration behind her success was her father, who passed away from a brain stroke in December 2025, just months before her triumph.

> “My Papa cannot see this, but this Commonwealth Games gold medal is for him. He died of a brain stroke seven months ago. My Papa was a cycle mechanic who earned barely \u20b9300 a day. He raised our family in a mud house in a small village in Tripura. He always supported me. After my knee injury, he took me to Delhi for treatment,” she said.



Asmita recalled that she never imagined she would one day stand on top of the Commonwealth Games podium. She said her father always believed in her talent and stood by her through every challenge, including a serious knee injury that threatened her career.

The judoka admitted that her father’s sudden death left her devastated and made her feel as though her dreams had come to an end.

However, just 10 days after his passing, her mother encouraged her to return to training instead of giving up. Following her mother’s advice, Asmita resumed training at Sports Authority of India (SAI), Bhopal, where she received continuous support from coaches and staff.

She credited SAI Bhopal for helping her rebuild both physically and mentally, saying their guidance played a crucial role in her Commonwealth Games success.

Asmita also thanked her coach Yashpal Solanki, senior Vijay Yadav, and everyone who supported her throughout her journey. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to her early coaches, including Bina Debnath, Manik Lal, and Pranab Sir, who nurtured her talent in Tripura and encouraged her to pursue the sport at the national level.
