Agartala, July 27:<\/strong> A delegation of nine CPI(M) MLAs, led by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, on Monday met Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu and submitted a memorandum demanding that the investigation into the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar be placed under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Chaudhury questioned the state government’s decision to treat the incident as a case of suicide and expressed doubts over the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the government. He said the circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death had raised serious concerns among people across the state and the country.

The CPI(M) leader stated that Dhankar was a highly respected police officer with an exemplary service record, having served in Tripura, the CBI and on international deputation. He argued that such a case required an independent and credible investigation to establish the truth.

Chaudhury said that while the party had no personal objections to the officers appointed to the SIT, it believed that the investigation should be monitored by a sitting High Court judge to ensure transparency and public confidence. He also alleged that several honest officers in the state administration had been subjected to pressure and humiliation, making an independent judicial oversight necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who was also part of the delegation, echoed the demand. He said the CPI(M) had expected the government to constitute an inquiry under the supervision of the Tripura High Court after the completion of the DGP’s last rites. However, the party was surprised by the government’s decision to form an SIT headed by the West Tripura Superintendent of Police instead.

Sarkar clarified that the party was not questioning the competence of the officers in the SIT but maintained that the sensitivity of the case warranted judicial supervision. He said a High Court judge-led probe would help eliminate public suspicion and ensure that the truth emerged without any doubt.

According to Sarkar, the Governor acknowledged that the incident had raised important questions and that the truth behind the DGP’s death must come to light. The CPI(M) delegation urged the Governor to intervene and recommend the reconstitution of the SIT under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.

The opposition maintained that its sole demand was an impartial, transparent and court-supervised investigation into the death of the state’s top police officer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
