Agartala, July 24:<\/strong> Three youths were detained by local residents on Friday after they were allegedly caught red-handed stealing AC copper wires in the Khushbagan area of Surya Chowmuhani, Agartala. A scrap dealer, who was allegedly purchasing the stolen materials, was also detained before all four were handed over to the police.

According to local residents, the Khushbagan area has witnessed a sharp rise in thefts over the past one to one-and-a-half months, particularly involving AC copper wires, electrical cables, and other metal items. Frustrated by repeated incidents, local youths and residents organized a vigil to catch the culprits.

Residents claimed they apprehended the suspects while they were allegedly cutting and stealing AC copper wires. They also recovered around 36\u201337 pieces of AC copper wire from the accused. Based on the suspects’ alleged confession, locals said they identified the scrap dealer where the stolen materials were reportedly being sold and detained him as well.

Speaking to the media, a local youth alleged that most of the accused were drug addicts and urged the administration to identify and take action against those who purchase stolen goods from addicts, claiming they are the main beneficiaries of the theft racket. He also alleged that many scrap dealers were operating without proper licenses and demanded stricter enforcement against illegal buyers of stolen materials.

Some residents further alleged that a suspected thief caught on the previous day had been handed over to the police but was not kept in custody. They claimed thefts had targeted several locations, including Balaji Healthcare, Cosmo Hotel, and nearby residential houses, where AC wires had reportedly been cut repeatedly. They appealed to the administration to arrest those who buy stolen goods while ensuring drug-dependent offenders receive appropriate medical treatment if necessary.

Police, however, said they received information that local residents had apprehended thieves along with stolen property. Upon reaching the spot, officers took three alleged thieves and one scrap dealer into custody along with the recovered AC wires and other suspected stolen items.

Responding to allegations that police had previously declined to keep a detained suspect in custody, the police officer on the scene said he was not aware of any such incident.
