The successful transplant was announced by Medical Superintendent (MS) Bidhan Goswami and nephrologist Dr Manas Gop.

The transplant was carried out at the Super Speciality Building of AGMC and GB Pant Hospital with the support of kidney transplant specialists from Shija Hospitals. The recipient is a 23-year-old man, while his mother donated one of her kidneys to save her son.

According to hospital authorities, both the donor and recipient are in stable condition and are currently under close observation in the ICU.

MS Bidhan Goswami said kidney transplantation at GB Hospital began on July 8, 2024, when the first such procedure was performed. With Tuesday’s successful surgery, the hospital has now completed its eighth kidney transplant.

“Today’s transplant has already been completed successfully, and another kidney transplant is scheduled for tomorrow. Once the next procedure is completed, the total number of kidney transplants at the hospital will reach nine,” Goswami said.

He added that all seven patients who underwent kidney transplants earlier, as well as their donors, are doing well and have not developed any major post-transplant complications.

The hospital has once again planned two consecutive transplant procedures. In the present two cases, both recipients are young men suffering from kidney failure, while their mothers have come forward as kidney donors.

Dr Manas Gop said the transplanted kidney in Tuesday’s case started producing urine immediately after being connected to the recipient, which is considered a positive sign.

“Our eighth case has been successful so far. The donor and recipient, the mother and son, are both doing well. Another transplant is scheduled for tomorrow,” he said.

The 23-year-old recipient had reportedly been suffering from a congenital urinary reflux-related condition that gradually damaged his kidneys. He first came to know about his kidney problem in 2012 and had been undergoing dialysis for the past two years.

Doctors are hopeful that following the transplant, his creatinine level, which had remained around six to seven, will gradually fall to near-normal levels within the next few days.

Dr Gop, however, clarified that kidney transplantation is not a complete cure. A transplant recipient needs lifelong immunosuppressive medicines to prevent the body from rejecting the donated organ. The procedure, he said, offers patients a better quality of life and freedom from regular dialysis.

The state government is bearing the entire cost of the kidney transplant procedures. According to hospital officials, pre-transplant and post-transplant investigations, medicines, costly injections and other treatment expenses are being provided free of cost. The travel and stay expenses of specialist doctors coming from Shija Hospitals are also being covered by the government.

Dr Gop said the transplant programme involves coordinated teamwork between the Nephrology, Urology and Anaesthesia departments. Around 12 to 15 medical professionals are involved in a single transplant procedure.

Experts from Shija Hospitals, including transplant specialists, anaesthetists and operation theatre staff, are currently assisting the GB Hospital team. At the same time, local urologists and nephrologists are gaining experience and training.

Hospital authorities hope that, in the future, the local medical team will be able to independently conduct kidney transplants without requiring outside specialists.

Doctors also advised people to adopt healthy lifestyle habits to protect their kidneys. Reducing salt intake, maintaining a healthy body weight and following a balanced lifestyle can help protect not only the kidneys but also the heart, liver and lungs, Dr Gop said.

Tripura, 15 July 2026: Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital have successfully completed their eighth kidney transplant, marking another major achievement in the state’s healthcare sector.
