Agartala, July 10:<\/strong> In a major boost to Tripura’s agriculture and horticulture sectors, the state government on Friday flagged off the export of its renowned Queen Pineapple, scented lemons, and Kalikhasha aromatic rice to international markets from the Agriculture Research Centre at AD Nagar, Agartala.

The ceremonial flag-off was led by Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath, who described the initiative as a significant step toward expanding the global presence of the state’s premium agricultural products and improving farmers’ income.

Speaking at the event, the minister said the Agriculture Department has signed an agreement with a globally renowned retail organization operating 296 stores across Gulf countries. Under the agreement, the company will procure Tripura’s Queen Pineapple, scented lemons, Kalikhasha aromatic rice, and other organic products on an annual basis.

He said the first consignment includes scented lemons sourced from the Barmura Farmer Producer Company (FPC), agricultural produce from Trishna FPC in South Tripura, and Queen Pineapples collected by the Khabaksa Group FPC from Killa. The produce will be transported to the airport before being shipped by air and road to overseas markets.

The minister also announced that the buyer plans to source Sabri bananas and several indigenous rice varieties from Tripura in the coming months. He recalled that the state had recently exported 10,000 kg of Bird’s Eye Chillies to Germany, highlighting the government’s continued efforts to promote Tripura’s organic and specialty agricultural products abroad.

“Our primary objective is to ensure that farmers receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce. Both the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments are working together to create better market opportunities for them,” Nath said.

On the investment front, the minister revealed that Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth approximately \u20b91,117 crore have been signed in the agriculture sector with multiple investors. He added that the investment process is ongoing and more agreements are expected.

According to Nath, the MoUs cover the establishment of food processing centres, marketing partnerships, and a dedicated Centre of Excellence for Queen Pineapple. He also highlighted the commercial potential of pineapple leaves, noting that they can be processed into high-quality textile fibre used in luxury garments, while the fruit contains bromelain, an enzyme with significant medicinal applications.

He said these value-added opportunities would enable farmers to earn not only from the fruit but from every part of the pineapple crop, creating new avenues for income and agro-based industries in the state.
