Agartala, July 9:<\/strong> The investigation into the shocking incident in which a traffic police officer was allegedly abducted by the driver of an SUV while on duty has intensified, with senior police officials, including the Inspector General (Law & Order), visiting West Agartala Police Station to review the case.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at Battala, where Traffic ASI Biplab Dutta was conducting routine vehicle checks. According to police, after stopping a Bolero SUV for document verification, the driver suddenly accelerated. The officer climbed onto the bonnet to avoid being run over, following which the vehicle sped away before throwing him off near the Pratapgarh Steel Bridge and fleeing the scene.

Police have since recovered the SUV involved in the incident. However, the driver remains absconding, and an intensive search operation is underway to trace and arrest the accused.

Speaking to reporters, senior police officials described the incident as “highly unfortunate” and said a criminal case would be registered under stringent legal provisions. They stated that the accused’s actions could have resulted in the officer’s death and assured that the strongest possible legal action would be taken.

Officials confirmed that investigators have gathered important clues and evidence, including the vehicle, but are withholding further details to avoid compromising the investigation. They are also examining whether the accused had any personal, psychological, or criminal background that may have contributed to the incident.

The Inspector General (Law & Order) emphasized that traffic checks are a routine policing responsibility based on public trust. He said the incident should not be viewed as a breakdown of public safety but acknowledged that it serves as an important lesson for law enforcement to strengthen operational safety measures.

Police also assured that the department stands firmly behind the injured officer and will provide all necessary medical and administrative support. Officials stressed that ensuring the safety of both the public and on-duty police personnel remains a top priority and vowed to prevent such incidents from recurring.
