The event brought together students, PhD scholars, researchers from diverse backgrounds, forest officials, wildlife photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts to strengthen knowledge and capacity for the conservation of the state’s lesser-known wild cat species.

The workshop was organised by TYGER Collective (Tripura Youth for Green Ecology and Restoration) in collaboration with and with support from Dr. Giridhar Malla, Founder of the Eastern Himalayas Marbled Cat Project. The programme aimed to raise awareness about the ecological importance of Tripura’s small wild cats, including the clouded leopard, leopard cat, and jungle cat, the threats they face, and the role of scientific research and monitoring in their conservation.

The inaugural session was graced by Siddhartha Debbarma, TFS, Director, Sepahijala Zoological Park; Chiranjib Debnath, Biologist, Conservation Breeding Centre, Sepahijala Zoological Park; Dr. S. Warson Monsang, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Agartala; and Dr. Krishnendu Das, Professor of Mathematics, Women’s College, Agartala.

Over the two days, participants attended technical sessions covering the diversity, ecology, behaviour, conservation status, and successful conservation initiatives involving small wild cats in Northeast India. Conservation biologist Dr. Giridhar Malla highlighted the importance of protecting forest habitats and promoting research-based conservation strategies. Special emphasis was placed on the use of camera traps as a non-invasive tool for documenting small wild cats, monitoring their populations, and generating scientific data essential for conservation planning.

One of the highlights of the workshop was a hands-on field session inside Clouded Leopard National Park, where participants learned the practical aspects of camera trap installation. Under the guidance of experienced wildlife researchers Dr. Giridhar Malla and Hansatanu Roy, participants selected suitable locations, installed camera traps, and discussed field techniques used in wildlife monitoring.

The field experience enabled participants to connect classroom learning with real-world conservation practices and better understand the challenges of conducting wildlife research in natural habitats.

The workshop also encouraged discussions on collaborative conservation involving researchers, local communities, government agencies, and young conservationists. Participants actively engaged in interactive sessions, exchanged ideas, and explored opportunities for future research and conservation initiatives in Tripura.

The organisers, TYGER Collective, expressed their gratitude to the Forest Department for granting permission to conduct the field visit to Clouded Leopard National Park and for allowing participants to visit the Conservation Breeding Centre. They also thanked all the participants for their enthusiastic involvement and valuable contributions to the success of the programme.

The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to apply the knowledge and practical skills in camera trapping that they had gained, supporting wildlife conservation efforts and promoting awareness about the importance of protecting Tripura’s unique small wild cats and their forest ecosystems.

Tripura, 07 July 2026: A two-day workshop on “Small Wild Cat Ecology and Conservation in Tripura” was successfully conducted on 4–5 July 2026 at the Nature Learning Centre, Clouded Leopard National Park, Sepahijala, Tripura.
