Tripura, June 29, 2026: <\/strong>In a major anti-narcotics operation, police seized approximately 271.48 kg of dry cannabis from a luxury SUV in the Demdum area under the Fatikroy Assembly Constituency in Kumarghat subdivision. Two persons were arrested, and the seized contraband is estimated to be worth around \u20b915 lakh in the illegal market.

Addressing the media, SDPO Kumarghat Utpalendu Debnath said the operation was launched around 11:00 a.m. following specific intelligence about a white Mahindra XUV700 travelling from Agartala. During routine naka checking at Durgachowmuhani, police attempted to stop the vehicle. The occupants allegedly identified themselves using a false identity, claiming that one of them was a Mandal President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When officers became suspicious and questioned them further, the suspects allegedly resisted violently, physically assaulted Inspector Pankaj Debnath, bit his hand, and fled the checkpoint in the SUV.

Police immediately alerted teams ahead and sealed the Demdum naka. Despite attempting to break through the barricades, the SUV was intercepted about 500 metres from the checkpoint after a confrontation that reportedly damaged the vehicle’s tyre.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 167 packets of dry cannabis packed in 14 bundles, weighing approximately 271.48 kg. The seizure was carried out in the presence of an Executive Magistrate as per legal procedures.

Police also recovered two fake registration number plates (AS-01-FT-8774) from the vehicle, indicating possible use of forged number plates in addition to alleged drug trafficking.

The two accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and will be produced before the court. Investigators are also verifying the suspects’ claim that the SUV belongs to a Mandal President. Police said the ownership of the vehicle and the possible involvement of a larger drug trafficking network are under investigation.

The operation was conducted in the presence of Officer-in-Charge Sahadev Das of Fatikroy Police Station, senior police officials from Kamalpur subdivision, and other officers.
