JARC & JAC Announce Indefinite NH-8 and Railway Blockade from June 24 Over Unmet Demands<\/strong>

Agartala, June 17:<\/strong> The Joint Action Rehabilitation Committee (JARC) and Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing surrendered militants and returnees in Tripura, have announced an indefinite blockade of National Highway-8 and railway tracks from June 24, alleging prolonged government neglect of their nine-point charter of demands.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at Kumari Madhuti Rupshree Janajati Tribal Rest House on Wednesday.

Leaders of the two organizations stated that despite repeatedly meeting Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma and submitting memorandums to the state government, their demands remain unaddressed. They alleged that successive governments had failed to provide adequate rehabilitation benefits to surrendered members of former insurgent groups, including ATTF, NLFT, BNCT and TTYF, who had laid down arms in response to government appeals aimed at restoring peace in Tripura.

According to the organizations, many former militants surrendered with weapons before security forces, government officials and elected representatives between the mid-1990s and early 2000s. However, they claim that no comprehensive rehabilitation package was implemented, leaving many families deprived of land rights, education opportunities and other basic benefits.

The leaders said a memorandum outlining their nine demands was submitted to Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma on June 8, seeking an official meeting within a week to discuss their grievances. They further alleged that neither the minister nor senior officials of the Tribal Welfare Department responded to their request.

As a result, the organizations have announced an indefinite blockade of National Highway-8 and railway tracks beginning June 24. The proposed protest is expected to be held at locations including Brajendranagar, Khowathang and Sadhuchandra Para.

“We understand that a road and railway blockade will cause inconvenience to students, patients, employees and the general public. However, despite repeated appeals and meetings, the government has shown no concern towards our long-pending issues,” a JARC-JAC representative said.

The organizations warned that if their nine-point demands remain unresolved, they may intensify the agitation by organizing indefinite road blockades across various subdivisions of Tripura where returnee communities have a significant presence.

JARC and JAC have urged the state government to immediately initiate discussions and address the grievances of surrendered militants and their families to avoid disruption of road and rail connectivity in the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
