Tripura, 16 June 2026:<\/strong> In a significant recognition of Tripura\u2019s rich cultural heritage, the traditional Tripura Sarinda has been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The indigenous stringed musical instrument, deeply associated with the state\u2019s tribal communities, is renowned for its unique craftsmanship, distinctive sound, and cultural importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcoming the achievement, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha described it as a proud moment for the state. He said the GI recognition for the \u201cTripura Sarinda (Musical Instrument)\u201d would play a crucial role in preserving and promoting the region\u2019s invaluable folk traditions while further strengthening Tripura\u2019s cultural identity.

The GI tag is expected to provide greater visibility and protection to the traditional instrument, encouraging artisans and musicians to continue preserving this centuries-old craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the inclusion of the Sarinda, Tripura now has four GI-tagged products. The others are Tripura Queen Pineapple, Risha\/Pachra (Rignai), and Matabari Peda, each reflecting the state\u2019s unique heritage, culture, and craftsmanship.

The Chief Minister also congratulated the artisans, craftsmen, and musicians whose dedication, skill, and creativity have helped keep the tradition of the Sarinda alive for generations.
