Assam, June 13:<\/strong> An Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 transport aircraft crashed and caught fire while landing at the Air Force Station in Assam’s Jorhat on Saturday morning.

According to initial reports, the aircraft went down within the Air Force Station premises during landing operations, triggering a fire immediately after the crash. Emergency response teams were rushed to the site and quickly launched firefighting and rescue operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Authorities have also not confirmed whether there were any casualties or injuries. The Indian Air Force acknowledged the incident and stated that a detailed assessment is underway, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

The Antonov AN-32 is a twin-engine turboprop military transport aircraft widely regarded as the backbone of the IAF’s transport fleet. Designed in the Soviet Union to meet India’s operational requirements, the aircraft is capable of operating in extreme conditions, including high-altitude airfields and hot tropical environments. It can carry up to 7.5 tonnes of cargo, 50 passengers, or 42 paratroopers and is frequently used for logistical and supply missions in remote areas.

The incident comes just months after an IAF Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a routine sortie from Jorhat Air Force Station. The crash, which occurred on March 5, claimed the lives of both pilots on board.

Reacting to the latest incident, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We are aware of the IAF transport aircraft accident in Jorhat. We are awaiting further details.”
