Agartala, May 30:<\/strong> In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Tripura Medical College (TMC), Hapania successfully performed a complex and high-risk surgery on a two-day-old newborn suffering from a rare congenital condition known as Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH).

The baby boy, born to Deepankar Roy and Priti Roy of West Nalchar under Melaghar, was diagnosed with a severe left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia while still in the womb. The condition caused almost all of the infant\u2019s abdominal organs including the stomach, liver, spleen, and intestines to move into the left side of the chest cavity, compressing the lung and preventing normal development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Pediatric and Neonatal Surgeon Dr. Aniruddha Basak, the family approached him during the 38th week of pregnancy after an antenatal ultrasound revealed the serious abnormality. Acting on medical advice, the mother delivered the baby at GB Hospital on May 19, following which the newborn was immediately referred to Tripura Medical College for specialized treatment.

After stabilizing the infant and conducting necessary investigations, Dr. Basak and his team performed the delicate surgery on May 20. The operation lasted nearly two hours and involved relocating all the displaced abdominal organs back into the abdominal cavity and repairing the diaphragmatic defect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe surgery was extremely challenging because the baby was only two days old. Such cases often carry a 50-50 survival chance. Timely diagnosis, immediate referral, and coordinated teamwork played a crucial role in saving the child,\u201d Dr. Basak said.

He also credited the anesthesiology team, SNCU staff, operation theatre personnel, pediatricians, junior residents, and interns for their collective efforts in ensuring the success of the procedure.

Speaking about her experience, the infant\u2019s mother, Priti Roy, said the condition was detected only during a sonography examination conducted about a month before delivery. She expressed gratitude to the doctors and medical staff, stating that her baby is now recovering well and feeding normally.

Doctors confirmed that the newborn is currently stable, breastfeeding, and showing normal recovery signs. The baby is expected to be discharged from the hospital within the next couple of days.
