Although an earlier attempt was made in 2002 at the Unakoti Chill Model Orchard under the supervision of former Assistant Director Pratap Chandra Das, the effort resulted mainly in sour grapes and failed to achieve commercial success.

However, in August 2024, the Unakoti KVK launched a fresh scientific initiative by collaborating with the National Research Centre for Grapes in Pune. After studying the climatic suitability of the region, researchers selected grape varieties considered adaptable to Tripura’s environment and introduced them for trial cultivation.

Dr. Das explained that several grape varieties were tested using advanced scientific methods and modern horticultural practices. Among the tested varieties, one has shown particularly promising results in terms of growth, yield, and sweetness.

To improve fruit quality, researchers applied eight different treatment methods, including nutritional management and hormonal treatments. According to the scientist, these efforts have successfully enhanced the sweetness of the grapes, making it possible for Tripura to produce quality table grapes locally.

“At present, all grapes available in Tripura are imported from other states, and by the time they reach consumers, the quality often deteriorates after long transportation,” Dr. Das said. “Our goal is to ensure that fresh, locally grown grapes from Tripura reach the plates of Tripura’s people in the near future.”

The research team is continuing its work with ongoing support from NABARD. Another 18 grape varieties are expected to be introduced in Tripura for further trials, where scientists will evaluate performance using newer technologies and cultivation techniques before recommending the best varieties to farmers.

Dr. Das also highlighted the medicinal importance of the successful grape variety. He noted that it contains exceptionally high levels of anthocyanin a powerful antioxidant known for its anti-carcinogenic properties. Anthocyanin extracted from grapes is widely used in medicinal capsules and health supplements worldwide.

The successful cultivation marks a significant step forward for Tripura’s horticulture sector and could eventually create a new source of income for local farmers. Alongside research, KVK is also providing training and technical guidance to farmers interested in grape cultivation, paving the way for a potential grape industry in the state.

Tripura, 21 May 2026: In a remarkable agricultural achievement, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra has successfully demonstrated grape cultivation in Tripura’s climatic conditions, creating fresh hope for farmers and horticulture enthusiasts across the state.
